Handwriting the Constitution
Start Date: 4/19/2018Start Time: 1:00 PM
End Date: 4/19/2018End Time: 3:00 PM

Event Description:
Why would anyone want to handwrite anything anymore, especially the U. S. Constitution?

Maureen O’Hara has her reasons. O’Hara, of New York City, often brings handwritten texts into her art work. In a June 30, 2017, New York Times piece, she wrote, “Hand copying a document can produce an intimate connection to the text and its meaning.”
Before January 20, 2017, the U. S. Constitution had never been one of O’Hara’s chosen texts, but on that day she chose it as a political statement, and she invited others to join her in the Rose Reading Room at the New York Public Library. Since then, O’Hara has invited others to engage in this exercise in their communities.

We invite you to join us on the first floor (lower level) of the Charles J. Meder Library from 1-3 on Laker Day to hand copy any portion of the U.S. Constitution for however long you like.

Our goal is to allow ourselves to slow down by handwriting and copying another’s words. In doing so, we may just better understand this important document.
We will provide paper, markers, and copies of the Constitution.
