Poverty Simulation

Event Description:

Finger Lakes Community College along with ProAction of Steuben and Yates, Inc. invite you to walk a mile in the shoes of those facing poverty. A poverty simulation is an interactive session designed to sensitize those who frequently deal with low-income families as well as to create a broader awareness of poverty among policymakers, community leaders, and others. 

This experience is designed to help participants understand what it might be like to be a part of a typical low-income family trying to survive from month-to-month. During this activity, participants role-play the lives of people facing poverty. The task of each family is to provide for food, shelter and other basic necessities during four 15-minute "weeks.”  Families interact with community resources including human service agencies, grocers, pawnbrokers, bill collectors, job interviewers, police officer and others.  Following the activity, participants debrief and reflect on their experience with ProAction facilitators.
